A Door to a Good Night’s Sleep

Guest Post from ReThinking the City presenter Rebuilding Together Orlando

What’s the secret to a good night’s sleep? For many children in Central Florida the answer is simply having a bed. Imagine spending nights as far back as you can remember sleeping on a concrete floor or in a single bed with two of your siblings. This sounds like a situation you’d expect to hear about in a third world country. Unfortunately, this is the reality for children living right here in Central Florida.

Door to Good Night's SleepIn 2012, Rebuilding Together Orlando and its partners built over 60 beds that have been distributed to needy families in Central Florida. Although many have benefited, this effort just scratches the surface of the need. Helping children get a bed of their own just got easier.
Rebuilding Together Orlando has initiated a program to help needy children in your community called “A Door to a Good Night’s Sleep.” This fundraising effort is appropriately named because all eleven beds were constructed using upcycled doors.

Upcycling refers to doors that have been thrown away and would have otherwise ended up in a landfill. These doors were used to make headboards and footboards for the beds. If Rebuilding Together Orlando (RTO) had stopped at that point, the needs of many would be met, but RTO was blessed to have an army of volunteer, local artists apply their skills to painting the head and footboards of the beds. The results are amazing because each bed is unique and imaginative. You can see all of them at: www.charityauctionstoday.com/store/rto.

Our plan is to auction off these one of a kind beds as a fundraiser for Rebuilding Together Orlando. The winning bidders will have the opportunity to donate a bed to a needy Central Florida family of their choosing or allow The Mustard Seed, Central Florida’s largest charitable furniture bank, to identify and distribute the beds to local families in need. The donations provide beds, bedding, and mattresses, as well as further the mission of RTO, which brings volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of homeowners in need. This is a great, ready-to-go opportunity for all to give back to the community by helping those in need. All winning bids are tax deductible.

Here’s how you can help. Eleven beds are up for auction.

1. Go to the auction website at
2. Register.
3. Bid on a bed.

It’s just that simple. With the holidays rapidly approaching, this is a wonderful way for you or your organization to give a meaningful, priceless gift to a neighbor in need.
